Dr. Broughton is senior lecture in psychology at The University of Northampton, in the UK and a member of the Centre for the Study of Anomalous Psychological Processes (CSAPP). He teaches on the undergraduate level and in the recently developed Masters program in Transpersonal Psychology and Consciousness Studies as well as supervising PhD students.
Formerly Dr. Broughton was President of Intuition Laboratories,
Inc., a North Carolina start-up company that conducted basic research
into human intuition applied research to develop methods for identifying
intuitively advantaged individuals for business, healthcare and
intelligence applications. The work of Intuition Laboratories has now been incorporated into the CSAPP research program.
Dr. Broughton did his undergraduate studies at
Seton Hall University in New Jersey. After two years of teaching
in Egypt, he went on to obtain his Ph.D. in psychology from the
University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1978. In 1978-79, Dr. Broughton
was a visiting scientist at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands,
and from 1979 to 1981 he was research assistant professor in the
Department of Behavioral Sciences at the College of Optometry
of the State University of New York in New York City.
In 1981, he joined the Institute for Parapsychology
in Durham, North Carolina (successor to the famous Duke University
Parapsychology Laboratory) where he led research programs in mind-matter
interactions and extraordinary human cognition (extrasensory perception).
From 1995 Dr. Broughton served as Director of the Institute until
he left in 2000 to begin Intuition Laboratories.
In addition to numerous scientific
papers, Dr. Broughton is author of a popular and critically
acclaimed book on parapsychology. He frequently serves as a commentator
in television programs on parapsychology and intuition issues.
